The Tennessee diving team will kick off 2009 Saturday, Jan. 3, by hosting the Tennessee Diving Invitational. Seventeen schools, six from the Southeastern Conference, will head to Knoxville for the three-day competition.

The field includes more than 100 men's and women's divers from schools all over the country. Competing universities include Alabama, Auburn, Carnegie Melon, Clemson, Drexel, Florida, Georgia, Louisville, LSU, Navy, Nebraska, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Rider, SMU and Tennessee. The 17 schools make up the nation's largest collegiate diving invitational of the season.

"I am very pleased with the response we have received for the invitational this weekend," said UT diving coach Dave Parrington.

The Big Orange beat Louisville Oct 16 and is slated to face SEC opponents Florida and Georgia later in the regular season.

The competition format is similar to the NCAA Zone Qualifying meet that will be held at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center in March.

"I am looking forward to seeing how our divers respond to this type of challenge against a quality field in a championship format," Parrington said. "It will provide an excellent barometer for our young squad."

The first round of competition is set to begin Saturday at noon.
