Senior Matt Brewer picked up a straight-set victory on his way into the quarterfinals Friday at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
Brewer, ranked No. 52, had a bye into the second round, where he faced Nils Schive of San Diego. Brewer endured a lengthy tiebreaker in the first set to win it 7-6 (13) and then easily took the second set 6-1 to advance.
Freshman Rhyne Williams, ranked No. 22, won his first round over Luis Rattenhuber of San Diego State 6-4, 6-2. He then lost his second-round match to North Carolina's Stefan Hardy, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Junior Matteo Fago lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Amit Inbar of UCLA, and redshirt freshman Taylor Patrick fell to Nikola Bubnic of San Diego 6-4, 6-1. Clay Donato, the tournament's top seed, was later upset 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the second round by Bubnic.
In doubles, Brewer and Fago teamed up to defeat San Diego's Abdullah Hashem and Thibaut Visy 8-2. Williams and Patrick lost their first doubles match as a pairing, falling 8-2 to Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert of San Diego State.
