KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- The fourth-ranked Vols finished off a perfect double header Saturday, with a 7-0 win over visiting UT-Chattanooga at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center. Tennessee had earlier in the day defeated The Citadel 7-0 to kick off their 2002 campaign.

The Vols (2-0) duplicated their morning slate and won all three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. The No. 13-ranked duo of sophomore Simon Rea and senior Mario Toledo began the onslaught for the Big Orange, winning their No. 1 match against UTC's Jason Ontog and Tim Kutschera 8-4. The duo of senior Peter Handoyo and freshman Mark Dietrich then clinched the point for the Vols, with an 8-5 victory over Fabian Bechara and John Hangstefer in the No. 2 match. Tennessee senior Adam Carey and freshman Jacob Olsen then closed out the doubles matches, with an 8-4 win over UTC's Kyle True and Thomas Knizat in the No. 3 match.

In singles, it was Simon Rea fastest out of the gate once again, defeating UTC's Bechara 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 match. Toledo secured Tennessee's third point, with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Hangstefer in the No. 2 match. The Vols then took the victory, when Peter Handoyo downed Jason Ontog 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 1 match.

"I believe our performance today was a reflection of the hard work we have been putting in as a team," Rea said. "This team and this staff will not rest until we bring the national championship to Tennessee."

Tennessee's Carey, Dietrich and Olsen were also singles winners for the Vols. Carey defeated Knizat 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 3 match. Dietrich downed Kutschera 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 match. Olsen then finished the scoring for the Vols, with a 6-3, 6-1 win over James Dickerson in the No. 6 match.

"I am very pleased with our intensity today," offered UT head coach Michael Fancutt. "I saw some weaknesses we need to improve, but I also saw a lot that was good. I do want to point out Simon Rea's performance today. His intensity and work ethic were shining examples for the rest of our team."

The Vols will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center on the UT campus for another doubleheader. The Vols will meet No. 74 Memphis at 8 a.m., followed by a match with ETSU at 1 p.m. Admission will be free.
