KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- The fourth-ranked Tennessee tennis team opened a double header Saturday morning by taking a hard-fought 6-1 victory over the visiting Memphis Tigers at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center on the UT campus. The Vols' (3-0) win stretched their series lead against the Tigers to 5-0.

The No. 72-ranked Tigers came out fired up against the Big Orange, winning the first doubles point taken from Tennessee this season to put the Vols in an early hole 1-0. The Memphis pair of Alex Bucewicz and Michael Lahaie began the scoring, with a stunning 8-1 victory over senior Mario Toledo and freshman Mark Henderson in the No. 3 match. The Tiger duo of Ben Stapp and Lee Walker then secured the Tiger's lone point, with an upset 8-3 win over recently crowned SEC champions freshman Mark Dietrich and senior Peter Handoyo in the No. 1 match.

The Tigers would not score again, as the Vols would go on to take all six singles matches to polish off their third victory of the season. Toledo, ranked No. 14 nationally, started the scoring for the Vols, with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Schmulian in the No. 1 match. Handoyo then gave the Vols the lead, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Richard Magney in the No. 2 match. Senior Adam Carey defeated Stapp 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 5 match, before the No. 67-ranked Dietrich captured his first collegiate clinching point in a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Walker in the No. 4 match.

"We had a tough time this morning in doubles, but I was really happy to get my first clinching point in singles," Dietrich said. "Coach gave us a good talk before singles and then Pete (Handoyo) and Mario (Toledo) came out and provided good leadership, which propelled us."

Other winners for the Vols included: freshman Jake Olsen over Memphis' Bucewicz 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 5 match. Sophomore Wade Orr then finished the scoring, with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Chamberlain in the No. 6 match.

The Vols will be back in action Saturday afternoon, as they take on ETSU (0-0) at 1 p.m. at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center on the UT campus. Admission is free.
