The Tennessee men's tennis team got back to its winning ways Thursday night with a 6-1 victory over ETSU at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.
"I think we had a great week of practice, where the guys really worked on improving their game and it showed tonight," head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "I was proud to see what we implemented in practice carried over to the match."
The Vols two ranked doubles teams were too much for ETSU. Bobby Cameron and Kaden Hensel, ranked fifth in the nation, easily surpassed the Bucs Alex Ahlgren and Travis Sandlant, 8-2 at the No. 1 position. 34th-ranked Adam Hubble and Ben Rogers defeated Felix Insaurralde and Lisandro Picardo 8-4 at the No. 2 spot to win the point for UT. Hubble and Rogers are 6-0 this season at the two spot in the doubles lineup.
The Vols had let their opponents get off to quick starts in the past two matches but got off to a much better start against the Bucs. UT won the first set in five of the six matches. The Bucs did not quit though as they forced a third-set in four of the six matches.
Hensel gave the Vols a 2-0 lead with a three-set win over Insaurralde at the No. slot. Hensel won the first set handedly and after dropping the second, he raced to an early lead in the third and final set holding on for a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win.
Cameron put UT firmly in command of the match with a straight-set win over Predrag Burmazovic 6-4, 7-6. The UT junior is 3-1 at the No. 1 position in dual-matches.
Davey Sandgren clinched the match for Tennessee for the first time in his young career. The Gallatin native defeated Enrique Olivares 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 at the No. 3 position. Sandgren is nearly unbeatable in the third set; the freshman is now 10-1 this season when playing a third and final set.
Rogers extended UT's lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daniel Isaza at the No. 6 slot. Rogers is 4-1 in singles in home dual-matches this season.
Kiril Tcherveniachki capped UT's win with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, (10-5) victory over Picardo at No. 5 singles.
The Vols now have a 10 day break until its next match. Tennessee returns to action Sunday, Feb. 25, when it hosts a doubleheader. UT faces Furman at 9 a.m. and Morehead State at 6 p.m. All home matches have free admittance.
