March 8, 2002

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-- The No. 12-ranked Tennessee tennis team downed homestanding and No. 18-ranked Alabama 4-2 Friday in Tuscaloosa. The Vols move to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in SEC action this season.

The Vols, who now hold a 26-10 advantage over the Crimson Tide in their series, started slowly Friday, dropping their third doubles point in their last five matches. The pairs of William Boyles and Nick Beaque and Chris McRae and Brad Friedman were victorious for Alabama (9-3, 2-1 SEC) in the No. 2 and 3 matches respectively, to secure the point.

The doubles loss would not get the Vols down, as they went on to win the first four completed singles matches to capture the victory. No. 7-ranked senior Peter Handoyo ran his singles record to 12-0, with a win over No. 78 Chris Gostek at No. 1. Fellow seniors Adam Carey and Mario Toledo were also winners at No. 2 and 3 respectively. Carey downed Stephen Mitchell, while Toledo defeated Beaque in three sets. No. 80-ranked freshman Mark Dietrich then clinched the victory, with a three-set win over McRae in the No. 4 match. Michael Ray Pallares captured Alabama's lone singles victory over Jake Olsen in the No. 6 match..

"Alabama is an extremely hostile environment for dual matches," UT head coach Michael Fancutt said. "It was great to go in there and get a tough win."

The Vols will be back in action Sunday, as they visit No. 15 Auburn in a 2 p.m. showdown.
