AUBURN, Ala.-- The No. 12-ranked Tennessee tennis team lost a 4-3 marathon match at No. 15 Auburn Sunday, which was played in frigid temperatures and lasted over six hours. The win was Auburn's first over the Vols since the 1998 NCAA regionals.
Auburn (8-2, 3-1 SEC) was strong from the outset, handing the Vols their third doubles point defeat in their last four outings. All three Auburn doubles tandems took victories Sunday, highlighted by a two-hour 9-8 win for Rameez Junaid and Tiago Ruffoni over Tennessee's No. 15-ranked duo of Mario Toledo and Simon Rea in the No. 1 match.
The Vols (8-4, 2-2 SEC) would come back and tie the match at 3--3 in the singles segment, with wins by Toledo, Mark Dietrich and Rea, playing in the No. 3, 4 and 5 matches respectively. Auburn's No. 29-ranked senior Tiago Ruffoni would then shut the door on the Vols, when he outlasted Adam Carey in a match that lasted over four hours.
"Unfortunately, we just did not play well enough today as a team," UT head coach Michael Fancutt said. "But on a positive note, Simon Rea and Mario Toledo did have clutch performances for us, which kept us in the match."
The Vols will take to the
road again next weekend, as they visit No. 21 LSU Friday, at 4 p.m. The Vols
will then visit No. 26 Arkansas Sunday, at 1 p.m.
