BATON ROUGE, La.--The
No. 15 Tennessee tennis team defeated No. 28 LSU 5-2 Friday, in Baton Rouge. The
Vols move to 9-4 overall on the season and 3-2 in
Southeastern Conference play.
The Vols began the match
Friday by winning all three doubles matches to capture their first doubles point
in their last three outings. The Vols' No.
15-ranked duo of Mario Toledo and Simon Rea struck first with a win at No. 1.
The doubles tally was clinched when Tennessee's freshman tandem of Mark
Dietrich and Mark Henderson defeated LSU's Bryan Fisher and Jesse Smatt
in the No. 3 match. The newly formed senior duo of Adam Carey and Peter Handoyo
were
also winners in the No. 2 slot.
LSU (3-7, 0-5 SEC) did make
things interesting in singles, with wins by Dan Kiernan and Jason Hazley in
the No. 2 and 4 matches, respectively. It would
prove to be too little, as the Vols won the remaining four singles matches to
secure the victory. Winners for the Vols included No. 7-ranked Handoyo, Carey,
Rea and Wade Orr in the No. 1, 3, 5, and 6 matches, respectively. UT head coach
Michael Fancutt was very happy to get out of the hostile venue with this
result, simply saying, "we won," following the tough conference match
up.
The Vols will be back in
action Sunday, as they travel to Fayetteville to take on No. 23 Arkansas at
1 p.m.
