The Tennessee men's tennis team dropped the first match of its spring break trip to 15th-ranked Miami 7-0 on Monday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center to fall to 7-4 on the season.
"I want to give a lot of credit to Miami; they played a great match, up and down the lineup. They have an exceptional team this year," head coach Chris Mahony said. "Having said that, I was very disappointed with the way we faded at the end of the match, both physically and mentally. It was unacceptable and the situation will be addressed immediately.
Tennessee's only win of the day game at No. 1 doubles where Adam Hubble and Ben Rogers defeated Luigi D'Agord and Daniel Vallverdu 8-5. The Hurricanes won the doubles point by capturing the other two doubles matches.
The Vols started off singles play by capturing the first set in four of the seven matches. But Tennessee could not finish off any of those matches. Bobby Cameron, the defending SEC player of the week, fell to D'Agord, ranked 11th in the nation, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 position. Kaden Hensel lost to Vallverdu 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 position.
Kiril Tcherveniachki lost at No. 3 singles 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Tim Krebs. Ben Rogers lost in a third-set super tiebreaker to Eric Hechtman 4-6, 6-4, 1-0.
Freshman Hubble and Derek Stephens also lost at No. 5 and 6 singles. Hubble fell to Vivek Subramanian 6-4, 6-4. John Hoyes defeated Stephens 7-6, 7-5.
The Vols are in action again on Wednesday when they play at Florida Atlantic in their final non-conference match of the season.
