Tennessee All Business In 5-2 Victory Over Central Florida

The Tennessee men's tennis team put an exclamation point on its trip to Orlando for spring break Tuesday with a 5-2 victory over Central Florida to improve to 9-2 on the season.

"This was the perfect match, that we needed at this time of the season," men's acting head coach Chris Mahony said. "It was a tough, outdoor match in windy conditions. Central Florida is a good team that fought real hard and we had to play our best to come out with the win."

The Vols started off strong in doubles with all three UT tandems earning a victory. Ockie Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers, ranked No. 7 in the newest ITA polls that came out Tuesday, won their ninth straight match with a 8-5 victory over Joel Allen and Antonio Sierra at No. 1 doubles. Mark Dietrich and Morgan Wilson have now won three straight matches as they defeated Rhett Rosen and Simon Jaeger 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Bobby Cameron and Kaden Hensel also won their third straight doubles match defeating Ener Gursoy and Sebastian Delgado 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

The Vols won four singles matches to earn the victory. Hensel won his fifth straight match defeating Sinan Sudas 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Cameron after suffering some tough losses last weekend rebounded with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Gursoy at No. 2 singles. Wilson earned his first victory since February 8 defeating Jaeger 7-6, 6-2. Ben Rogers had UT's other singles victory a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Delgado at No. 6 singles.

The newest ITA rankings also came out Tuesday. This is the first week that the poll was calculated using a computer formula, prior to this week all rankings had been voted on. The Vols are now ranked No. 21 in the team rankings. Dietrich is ranked No. 53 in singles and Oosthuizen and Rogers are ranked No. 7 in doubles.

 

 

The Vol netters are home this weekend for the final time in the 2005 season. On Friday, the Vols host No. 6 Ole Miss and their star Catalin Gard who is ranked No. 3 in the nation in singles. The match is tentatively scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Vol fans will have their final chance to see senior Mark Dietrich play as the Vols host No. 15 Mississippi State at 1 p.m. All UT home matches are free to the public.
