KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- The No. 8-ranked Tennessee tennis team defeated visiting Murray State 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Vols will now begin to prepare for the SEC tournament, which begins Thursday in Knoxville.

The Racers (15-7) gave the Vols (16-5) all they could handle in the doubles segment, capturing one win and forcing the clinching match into a tiebreak. Murray State's No. 38-ranked duo of Nikola Aracic and Freddy Sundstein captured the only doubles win for the Racers in the No. 1 match 8-6 over Tennessee's No. 20-ranked pair of Simon Rea and Mario Toledo. Tennessee then countered with a win at No. 3, when the freshman tandem of Mark Henderson and Jake Olsen defeated the Racer's Mike Schmidbauer and Zakaria Bahri. The Vols then clinched the point with a 9-8 tiebreaker win by Andy Crews and Mark Dietrich in the No. 2 match.

The Vols went on to capture five of the six singles matches to reach the final 6-1 tally. Tennessee's Peter Handoyo raised his season record to 20-2 with his victory at No. 1. Freshmen Henderson and Olsen were also victorious in the No. 5 and 6 matches, respectively, with Olsen capturing his first ever clinching point for the Vols. Dietrich and Carey then closed the scoring for the Vols, with wins in the No. 2 and 3 matches, respectively. Hoyem was the lone singles winner for the Racers, when he defeated Rea in the No. 4 match.

The Vols will be back in action Friday in the SEC tournament quarterfinal round, when they take on the winner of the Florida-Vanderbilt match at 5 p.m. at the Varsity tennis Center on the UT campus. The Vols (16-5, 7-4 SEC) are the fourth-seed for the SEC tournament.

Handoyo Named SEC Player of the Week

Tennessee senior Peter Handoyo was named SEC player of the week for the second time this season Tuesday, by the SEC office. Handoyo, who led the Vols to a win over top-ranked Georgia last week, was also named player of the week Feb. 26-March 3.

Handoyo won two matches last week against the Bulldogs, including the doubles clinching point, which gave the Vols an all important 1-0 lead in the match. He and partner Adam Carey defeated No. 33-ranked Adam Seri and Brandon Wagner in the No. 2 match and remained undefeated as a duo since pairing up a month ago. Handoyo then defeated No. 51-ranked Lesley Joseph in the No. 2 singles match to give the Vols a 2-0 lead.

Handoyo's record on the season now stands at 20-2 overall, 9-2 in the SEC and 10-2 against ranked players. He is also 15-5 in doubles play overall and 8-3 in SEC contests. His 137 singles victories rank as the third most in Vol tennis history. He is four wins shy of passing Shelby Cannon (1985-88) for second place.

"This is a well deserved award for Pete (Handoyo)," UT head coach Michael Fancutt said. "He is a great leader for our team on and off the court. This is just another great accolade to add to an already stellar career for Pete at UT."
