Tennessee Head Coach Chris Mahony
"It was a dogfight. It came down to a duel, and there were about three matches where somebody had a match point about every point. We got the job done.
"It was about a perfect first-round match. We're in a situation where we're in a four-way tie for that last bye spot. It's nice to have that bye, but it is also nice to get a good first round match where you get some court time under the conditions and on Georgia's courts, and get that one that doesn't take too much out of you. There were some close matches out there, but at the end of the day it wasn't a five hour marathon. We got some good, strong competition. Hopefully, that'll put us in good stead for tomorrow against South Carolina."
Tennessee sophomore Kiril Tcherveniachki (No. 5 singles, clincher)
"Today he [Billy Mertz] got off to a good start and then Coach (Chris) Woodruff gave me good advice on how to counteract what he was doing. I won 6 and 6 but it was really, really tough and I was pretty happy to get through it."
"It's pretty important to get my first win. I'm just looking forward to tomorrow's match, and I'll just take it day by day. I'm looking quite confident against South Carolina."
Alabama Head Coach Billy Pate
"Tennessee played an outstanding match. They've got a great team. Unfortunately we came up on the short end of the stick. We've got a young team; we'll grow from this and hopefully we'll come back next year with a vengeance. We fought exceptionally hard today and we had a lot of opportunities."
