KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee men's tennis team advanced to Sunday's second round by defeating East Tennessee State 4-0 behind clutch singles play on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.

"The guys played well today," acting head coach Chris Mahony said. "ETSU always hits a lot of balls in and makes us work hard. Tomorrow I look for the guys to come out sharper with more intensity in the doubles matches."

The match originally slated to begin at 10 a.m. didn't begin until 11:40 because of rain in the Knoxville area. In the beginning it looked like ETSU handled the delay better as the Bucs quickly broke UT's serve in two of the three doubles matches to gain the advantage. But Tennessee finished strong to gain the crucial doubles point for the fifth straight match. Mark Dietrich and Morgan Wilson won their seventh straight match at the No. 2 position with an 8-2 victory over Felix Insaurralde and Lisandro Picardo. Bobby Cameron and Kaden Hensel won their fifth straight match defeating Moises and Sebastian Serrano 8-5.

Ockie Oosthuizen gave Tennessee a 2-0 lead with his victory at the No. 3 slot over Fernando Fiuri 7-6, 6-0. Oosthuizen trailed in the first set 4-2 before battling back to force a tiebreaker. Tie-breaker victories would be a theme in all three UT matches as Dietrich and Wilson both clinched their matches with tiebreaker victories in the second set.

Dietrich defeated Oscar Posada 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 1 position to make the score 3-0 in favor of Tennessee. In the second set both players held serve into the tiebreaker but Dietrich was able to outlast the ETSU ace to put the Vols on the doorstep of victory.

Wilson would finish off the Bucs with his 6-1, 7-6 victory over Moises Serrano giving the Australian native his first match point at Tennessee. Wilson and Serrano would also both hold serve in the second set.

"I was just concentrating on focusing on my match and ignoring everything else that was going on around me," Wilson said.

Tennessee awaits the winner of the Ohio State/Brown match in Sunday's second round. The second round match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the UT Varsity Outdoor Courts. Live stats will be available at UTsports.com.
