Tennessee senior Mark Dietrich dropped a tough three set match to Ryler DeHeart of Illinois 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships at the George P. Mitchell Outdoor Tennis Center Wednesday to finish his season and career at UT.
Dietrich dropped the first set to the Illinois junior. Both players held serve and with the score 4-3, DeHeart broke Dietrich's serve and then captured the set one game later. Dietrich battled back in the second set winning 6-2 to set up the crucial third set. In the third set, Dietrich led at the first break 2-1 but DeHeart won the next 5 games to win the set and clinch the match.
Deheart is ranked eighth nationally and is the seventh seed in the singles championship. Dietrich is ranked No. 54 in the latest rankings and was unseeded.
The Memphis native finishes his career 75-54 in singles and 75-35 in doubles. Dietrich spent his senior season playing at the No. 1 slot in the singles line-up and the No. 2 slot in the doubles line-up. Dietrich has been ranked as high as No. 43 in singles
Tennessee sophomores Ockie Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers begin doubles play tomorrow. The UT duo received a 5-8 seed and face Jonathan Chu and Ashwin Kumar of Harvard in the first round. Oosthuizen and Rogers are currently ranked No. 9 in doubles. Chu and Kumar are ranked No. 30. Live stats can be accessed at UTsports.com.
