Southern Intercollegiates Draw

Junior Edward Jones recorded a straight-set victory to headline the Tennessee Volunteers opening action Friday at the Land Rover Napa Valley Tennis Classic in St. Helena, Calif.

Jones, who primarily played No. 6 for the Vols last season, defeated Vanderbilt's No. 5 Blake Bazarnik 6-4, 7-6 (4) in his first match at the Meadowood Resort.

The three other Vols in California, sophomore Jarryd Chaplin and freshmen Hunter Reese and Brandon Fickey, all lost their opening-day matches. Chaplin dropped his first career match against a ranked opponent, falling to No. 35 Clay Thompson 6-1, 6-4.

The tournament is in round-robin format, so the Vols will play singles matches Saturday and Sunday to conclude the event. The winner in each of the eight round-robin groups will face off in a tiebreaker tournament to decide the Napa Valley Tennis Classic champion.

In Georgia: Senior Bryan Swartz picked up right where he left off at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.

Just off his first career tournament title, Swartz improved to 6-0 to start his final collegiate season, beating Winthrop's Dylan Comerford 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the Division II draw.

Swartz and freshman Peter Nagovnak also teamed up for a win in the top doubles division, beating Samford's Elliot Barnwell and Zac Dunkie 9-8 (4).

Nagovnak lost his first-round match against 10th-seeded Tripper Carleton of Florida 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in the Division I draw.
