Sept. 24, 2010
Sophomore Taylor Patrick and junior Bryan Swartz each picked up two victories Friday to lead the Vols at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.
Patrick, a native of Knoxville, turned out lopsided results in his first two matches of the season. He completely shut out Alex Metzner of Radford 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the Division III flight. Later in the day he beat Carles Pons of Eastern Kentucky 6-2, 6-1.
Swartz, who was also competing in the Division III draw, won a pair of three-set matches and opened the day with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win against Middle Tennessee State's Kyle Wishing. Swartz picked up a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Henry Walker of South Carolina in the second round.
Sophomores Edward Jones and Max Stevens both lost their opening singles matches in the first and second division draws respectively, but they combined for a doubles win in the evening, defeating Elliot Barnwell and Matt Langley of Middle Tennessee State in the round of 64. The Vol duo then lost to third-seeded Christian Blocker and Keith Crowley of Miami 8-5.
For Jones, the loss snapped his six-match doubles winning streak dating back to last season.
