Taylor Patrick |
Sept. 25, 2010
Sophomore Taylor Patrick won two more matches in straight sets Saturday to advance to the Division III semifinals of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.
Patrick started the day by defeating Alabama's Carlos Taborga 6-2, 7-6. He collected his fourth straight-set win of the tournament in the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Winthrop's Guy Kubi.
As a freshman, Patrick did not advance past the quarterfinals of any event. Until this weekend, he had never won more than two consecutive matches.
Times have certainly changed for Patrick. Including two victories early in the spring season, he is currently riding a team-best six-match winning streak.
The Knoxville native faces Illia Ziamslov of UNC-Wilmington in Sunday's semifinal. The championship match is scheduled later in the day.
Junior Bryan Swartz was in the Division III round of 16 Saturday but lost to Elon's Carlos Arbolega 6-1, 6-2.
Sophomores Edward Jones and Max Stevens lost their opening-round matches Friday in the Division I and II flights respectively, but both rebounded with straight-set wins in consolation Saturday. Jones defeated Deidrik Berg of Stetson 6-2, 6-1, and Stevens beat Cody Loup of LSU 6-4, 6-2.
