PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. - Tennessee tennis players Rawl Martin and Johnny Thornton were both eliminated from their respective draws Saturday morning at the adidas Collegiate Invitational at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. Martin's round-of-16 loss brought his sophomore season winning streak to an end.
Martin suffered his first setback of the fall season at the hands of Louisville freshman Damar Johnson. The Memphis native had previously gone undefeated in his last six matches. Martin's overall fall singles record now stands at an impressive 6-1 through two events.
True freshman Johnny Thornton was also defeated Saturday. Arizona State sophomore Ryan McBride denied the former Chattanooga prep standout a spot in the quarterfinals by winning their consolation-draw contest.
"Although Rawl and Johnny didn't get the wins [Saturday], both of them are progressing in their games and in their match play," seventh-year Tennessee head coach Michael Fancutt said.
The next event on the Volunteers' schedule is the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships at The Champions Club in Chattanooga. Pre-qualifying for that tournament begins Oct. 3, with the main draw being contested Oct. 9-12. The Tennessee coaching and training staffs hope to have injured seniors Wade Orr and Simon Rea, the nation's No. 12-ranked collegiate singles player, healthy and ready to play in time for the championships. By virtue of his current ITA ranking, Rea would be granted automatic entry into the event's main draw.
