TULSA, Okla. -- Freshmen Sean Karl and Markus Kerner are leading off Tennessee's stay at the ITA All-American Championships on Saturday with the start of pre-qualifying singles competition.
Karl is set to take on Wisconsin's Tomas Pitra in the morning's opening round while Kerner plays Joakim Norstrom of Saint Mary's College of California.
Two rounds are played Saturday. If they advance to Sunday's play, they could take the court for two more matches.
Karl and Kerner must win four matches in pre-qualifying to move into the qualifying tournament. From there, three wins are required to gain access to the 64-player singles draw.
Bhat lost 6-1, 6-0 to Samford's Austin Ackers, the top seed in the second flight while Norton fell to Abilene Christian's Jason Proctor 3-6, 7-5, 6-0. The pair also lost in doubles to ETSU's Joao Silva and Conner Huertas 8-4.
In the afternoon, Bhat rebounded to win his consolation match against EKU's Joao Maio 5-7, 6-0, [10-7].
