ATHENS, Ga. -- Tennessee men's tennis players Ockie Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers defeated a seeded opponent for the second straight day Sunday in the Division I doubles flight at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
In quarterfinal action at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, Oosthuizen and Rogers defeated Mississippi State's Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto 8-6. Carvalho and Pinto were the No. 4 seed in the tournament. On Saturday the Vols sophomores beat Auburn's Gabor Zoltan Pelva and Alex Schweizer, the No. 5 seed. The Vols will get a chance to make it three straight wins over seeded opponents when they face off against Florida State's Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof in the semifinals. The Seminole tandem is the top-seeded duo in the draw.
In singles action, Matt Berry continued his run in the Division II consolation bracket. The UT sophomore won his quarterfinal matchup with Vanderbilt freshman Evan Dufaux 6-3, 6-2. In the semifinals, Berry needed a tiebreaker to get past Georgia Tech freshman George Gvelesiani 7-5, 2-6, 10-8. Berry will play in the finals Monday at 9 a.m. against Florida's Ryan Sherry, the No. 5 seed.
"It was also great to see Ockie and Ben step up and beat two ranked teams -- teams that will probably be the No. 1 doubles teams for Auburn and Mississippi State. I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone performs [Monday]."
Due to inclement weather caused by Hurricane Jeanne, all matches played Monday will take place at UGA's Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts.
