Three members of Tennessee's men's tennis team won pre-qualifying singles matches Friday at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships. Kiril Tcherveniachki and Matt Berry defeated their respective second-round opponents, while four other Vols were eliminated from the competition.
Berry extended his win streak to six with a pair of victories on Friday. In the morning session, Berry defeated Marquette's Brett Binkley 6-0, 6-3. In the afternoon, the UT sophomore came from behind to beat Furman's Ben Pauluhn 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Berry will resume play Saturday at 10 a.m. against Northwestern's Adam Schaechterie.
Tcherveniachki received a bye into the second round, where he disposed of Northwestern's Matt Christian 6-2, 6-3. The New Zealand native faces Oregon's Markus Schiller Saturday at 9 a.m.
Vols newcomer David Baxendine continued his solid play with a victory over Arkansas senior Talley Parker 6-3, 6-4. In the round of 128, Baxendine met Louisiana-Lafayette's Dusan Tabak and lost 6-0, 6-4.
Sophomore Johnny Thornton dropped his first-round match to Arizona State's Nick Hegarty 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
Berry and Tcherveniachki begin pre-qualifying doubles play Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Furman's Brian Crook and Allen Simmons.
