TULSA, Okla. -- Junior Jarryd Chaplin was the first winning player off the courts Monday in the opening round of qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Chaplin defeated Yale's John Huang 6-4, 6-2 in his morning match to move just two wins away from the 64-player main draw.
He faces TCU qualifier Facundo Lugones at 11 a.m. Eastern.
Chaplin was just one of three Vols to win Monday. Sophomore Brandon Fickey mounted a rally late in the second set but eventually lost 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 to TCU's JT Sundling. Senior John Collins fell 6-2, 6-1 to UCLA's Dennis Mkrtchian.
Fickey is still in the running to qualify for doubles with senior Edward Jones.
Sophomores Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese are both automatically in the main draw, thanks to being ranked 15th and 34th in the nation respectively. The All-American will be Libietis' season debut, while Reese was a finalist two weeks ago at the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate.
