Matt Berry extended his win streak to seven Saturday morning, and Kiril Tcherveniachki also won as the two Tennessee men's tennis players advanced to the round of 32 at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships pre-qualifying. Berry and Tcherveniachki then teamed up for the first time this year as doubles partners at the Champions Club.
"Matt and Kiril both played solid," UT head coach Michael Fancutt said. "Kiril, in particular, played as well as I've seen him play as a Volunteer. Tomorrow will be tougher for both of them as they play better and better opponents."
Berry continued his fine fall play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Northwestern's Adam Schaechterle. Schaechterle had received one of the fifteen No. 1 seeds given out in the pre-qualifying stage. Berry plays Purdue's David Robinson on Sunday.
Tcherveniachki won his second match of the All-American Championships with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Oregon's Markus Schiller. The UT sophomore faces San Diego State's Daniel Jung in the round of 32.
Berry and Tcherveniachki, who played with different partners in last week's Southern Intercollegiate Championships, teamed up Saturday for the first time. The duo could not duplicate their individual success though, as they fell to Furman sophomores Greg Maarschalk and Ben Pauluhn 8-6.
