TULSA, Okla. -- A critical hold late in the third set helped propel junior Jarryd Chaplin into the final round of qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships.
Chaplin held his final serve in a 20-minute game before breaking TCU's Facundo Lugones to capture a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 second-round win at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
On Wednesday, Chaplin takes on Georgia's Nathan Pasha in the final round of qualifying at noon Eastern. The winner will advance to the 64-player main draw.
Chaplin is off to a 4-1 start in singles this season and picked up his second career ranked win Monday against No. 113 John Huang of Yale. The junior from Sydney, Australia, is coming off his first year as a full-time starter in the singles lineup, playing primarily at the No. 4 position.
Jones and Fickey, who played No. 2 doubles together during the indoor season last year, defeated San Diego's Thibaut Visy and Clarke Spinosa 8-5 in the first round and followed that with an 8-3 victory over Florida State's Jordan Kelly-Houston and Michael Rinaldi.
The Vol duo needs to win two matches Wednesday to advance to the main draw. Jones and Fickey play 48th-ranked Kyle McMorrow and Emmett Egger of Washington at 3 p.m. Eastern.
