Tennessee men's tennis player Matt Berry extended his singles winning streak to nine matches, winning twice Sunday at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships to advance to the qualifying round. The UT sophomore will join Ockie Oosthuizen, who makes his tournament debut in the singles qualifying tournament.
"Today was a great effort from Matt Berry," UT associate head coach Chris Mahony said. "Matt showed a fighting spirit and has built up a lot of confidence by winning nine matches in the last two weekends"
Berry took on a seeded opponent for the second straight round and defeated Purdue's David Robinson 6-2, 6-1. The win advanced the South Africa native to the round of 16, where he met SEC rival Alabama's Eric Molnar. Berry lost the first set but battled back to win the second stanza. Berry won the match when Molnar retired because of cramping.
"Berry did a great job of getting off the court quickly in the morning." Mahony said. "Conserving energy for the battle against the Alabama player who was their No. 3 singles player last year."
Kiril Tcherveniachki dropped his round-of-32 match against San Diego State's Daniel Jung 6-2, 7-6(5). The UT sophomore won his first two matches of the tournament before losing Sunday.
Ben Rogers and Oosthuizen attempt to keep their own win streak alive when they begin play Monday in the doubles qualifying draw. Oosthuizen and Rogers have won all five of their matches this season.
