TULSA, Okla. -- Juniors Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese scored a late-night win over N.C. State on Thursday to advance to the second round of the ITA All-American Championships.
Libietis and Reese, the No. 1 seeds, broke serve late in the match and held for an 8-5 victory over the Wolfpack's Nick Horton and Sean Weber to end a long first day for the Vols on a high note.
The Vols' veteran doubles pair could play up to two matches Friday. Only Reese is still alive in singles, set to play in the consolation draw.
Reese lost his opening-round match to qualifier Austin Powell of NC State 6-3, 6-2 in the early afternoon to drop into consolation competition. Once there, he outlasted Florida State's Benjamin Locke 7-5, 6-7, 6-1.
Last year, Reese reached the consolation semifinals.
Libietis, the tournament's No. 1 seed, had his tournament run in singles stopped in the second round. He beat UCLA's Dennis Mkrtchian 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in his first collegiate match of the fall season but then lost to Texas freshman qualifier George Goldhoff 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
