Senior Matteo Fago and sophomore Tennys Sandgren won their first-round qualifying matches in straight sets Monday to move one step closer to the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Fago defeated John Huang of Yale 6-1, 6-4, and Sandgren earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Milo Hauk of St. John's. Both Vols improved to 2-1 this season.
In the second round of qualifying, Fago opens the day against 80th-ranked Eliot Potvin of Georgia Tech. Sandgren, currently ranked No. 83, plays Dean Jackson of San Diego.
A victory Wednesday would be the 75th in Fago's career at UT, rare territory for many players. Associate head coach Chris Woodruff (1992-93) and Fabio Silberberg (1989-91) are tied for 15th on the program career wins list with 81 each.
The final round of qualifying is on Wednesday, and winners advance into the main draw, which begins Thursday.
Doubles Qualifying Begins Tuesday
Fago and Sandgren are also starting the doubles qualifying Tuesday and are faced with a tough task in the first round, drawing the No. 1-seeded TCU team of Emanuel Brighiu and Chris Price.
Brighiu and Price, currently ranked 23rd in the ITA national rankings, are the highest-ranked team Fago and Sandgren have faced as a pairing. They have played - and beaten - the only ranked opponent they have faced together, earning a 9-8 (3) victory over UCLA's Kallim Stewart and Matt Brooklyn, who were ranked 36th at the time.
Fago and Sandgren have a 2-1 record this season in doubles and a 7-2 overall record together. In his career, Fago is 9-2 against ranked opponents, most of those wins coming during his sophomore season with Boris Conkic.
If Fago and Sandgren defeat the TCU pair, they will play their second-round doubles match later in the afternoon. The third round is scheduled for Wednesday.
