TULSA, Okla. -- Sophomore Hunter Reese kept his run at the ITA All-American Championships alive with three wins in the consolation draws Friday.
While the Vols' run in the main draw ended Friday, Reese stayed in the hunt for the consolation prize with a victory in singles and a pair of doubles wins with senior John Collins.
In singles, Reese defeated Malte Stropp of Mississippi State for the second time in his career 6-1, 6-4 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals, where he faces Daniel Whitehead of Texas.
The winner of the consolation tournament Sunday earns a spot in the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November.
Reese and Collins, seeded third in the main draw, suffered an upset to Auburn in the opening round, but the Vols' top-ranked pairing made good work in doubles Friday. They beat top Vanderbilt duo Ryan Lipman and Gonzales Austin 8-4 and then beat Baylor's Marko Krikovic and Robert Verzaal 8-5.
The doubles tiebreaker proved to be a blessing, then a curse for the team of Mikelis Libietis and Jarryd Chaplin in the main draw. After opening the tournament with a tiebreaker victory Thursday, Libietis and Chaplin faced match points before bouncing fourth-seeded Chris Camillone and David Holiner of Texas 9-8 (7).
The tiebreaker magic ran out in the third match, however, as Libietis and Chaplin lost 9-8 (3) to North Florida qualifiers Moritz Buerchner and Norbert Nemcsek.
In main draw singles, Libietis lost in the third round to Virginia's Mac Styslinger 6-2, 6-0.
