Vols Face Elimination in Third Round All-American Championships

Oct. 6, 2002

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- All four Vols who were attempting to qualify for the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships have been eliminated, with both Simon Rea and Vincent Perna finally being knocked out of the running in prequalifying action.

Having already earned spots in the event's main draw, 48th-ranked Mark Dietrich and 82nd-ranked Wade Orr will now be the only players representing Tennessee in the tournament, which begins main draw competition Thursday, Oct. 10.

After spectacular showings in each of his first two matches, Rea, a junior, finally met his match in the prequalifying round of 64, losing to Ryler DeHeart from Illinois 7-5, 6-1.

Perna also saw his hopes of earning a spot in the event's main draw quickly fade when he dropped a 7-6(3), 6-1 contest to LSU's Rafael Corazza in the second round.

In losing, Rea and Perna joined teammates Mark Henderson and Rawl Martin, each of whom were eliminated in the early rounds of prequalifying.

Tennessee head coach Michael Fancutt indicated that despite the losses, he was pleased with the play of the Vol netters, in particular, freshmen Rawl Martin and Vincent Perna. The two newcomers each notched wins before being eliminated.

Associate head coach Chris Mahony also voiced optimism about the recent play of Orr and Dietrich. Both netters had solid outings at the adidas Invitational late last month, with Orr advancing to the quarterfinals and Dietrich making an appearance in the consolation semis. Mahony saw the event as a confidence builder for both players going into the All-American Championships.
