CHATTANOOGA - Tennessee's men's tennis tandem of Wade Orr and Simon Rea advanced to the Round of 16 Tuesday in the doubles qualifying draw at the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships at The Champions Club.
The Vols' opening-round opponents, Illinois State's Ben Pettinari and Djordje Uskokovic, were randomly selected as "Lucky Losers" after three rounds of doubles pre-qualifying, and were given the chance to advance to the qualifying draw without playing their fourth-round contest last Sunday.
In a match that served as the first doubles competition of the year for both Orr and Rea, the Vol seniors performed well, notching an 8-6 victory over the Redbird duo. The Vols are back in action Wednesday morning, when they face the draw's No. 1-seeded team of K.C. Corkery and James Pade of Stanford in the Round of 16.
Not normally doubles partners, Orr and Rea have not competed together since the 2001 season, when they posted a record of 4-3 during their brief stint as a pairing. Orr and junior Mark Dietrich debuted at No. 19 in the ITA fall preseason doubles rankings Sept. 3. Dietrich, however, suffered a leg injury last month before the pair ever had a chance to take the court this season.
By virtue of his No. 12 collegiate singles ranking, Rea has been granted automatic entry into the main singles draw, which begins play Thursday.
With over 300 competitors taking part, the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships is the largest tournament of the 2003-04 collegiate tennis season. It offers the first of three national singles and doubles titles during the season, and is followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
