Sophomore Tennys Sandgren won two more matches Saturday to reach the top flight finals of the Elon Invitational in Elon, N.C.
Sandgren, the top seed, nearly shut out Stijn Neulemans of Radford 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals before beating Simm Tuus of Liberty 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. He improved his fall record to 5-2.
He faces second seed Davy Sum of Campbell in the title match.
Sophomore Edward Jones won his quarterfinal match in the top flight but lost a close one in the semifinals to Sum 7-6, 7-5.
Sandgren and Jones will play for the championship in the top doubles draw. The two defeated Sum and Dominic Kaniewski of Campbell 9-8 (2) in the semifinals.
Sophomore Taylor Patrick will go for his second career doubles title Sunday as well in the B2 Draw. He and freshman Colton Norton beat the combined team of Ian Kahler of Campbell and Andrew Prince of Elon 8-6 in the semifinals to advance.
Notably, Norton also won his first collegiate singles match Saturday, defeating Ed Snead of Presbyterian 6-3, 6-1 in the C1 consolation draw.
