Tennessee men's tennis players Ockie Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers bid to make the quarterfinals at the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships ended Friday, when they lost for the first time this fall.
Oosthuizen and Rogers lost to Mississippi State's Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto 9-7 in the round of 16. The UT sophomores defeated Carvalho and Pinto last week at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. The match was the eighth contest this year for Oosthuizen and Rogers against a ranked opponent.
Oosthuizen and Rogers have gotten off a red hot start this fall. The UT duo won their first nine matches of the season, while claiming the Division I doubles championship at the Southern Intercollegiates. In their 10 matches this fall they have defeated seven ranked opponents, including victories over five teams in the preseason top-20. Oosthuizen and Rogers were not ranked in the preseason. They are now 9-1 on the fall season.
All Three Vols Advance at Georgia Tech Fall Invitational
The men's tennis team got off to a good start at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational with all three Vols competing claiming a victory.
Kiril Tcherveniachki participating in the Flight "A" singles draw won his second round match against Georgia Tech's Scott Blackmon 6-1, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
David Baxendine and Matt Berry both won their first matches in Flight "B" singles. Berry who garnered the No. 1 seed, defeated Auburn's Brent Goedjen 6-4, 6-1. Baxendine defeated Clemson's Michael Gee 6-3, 6-4.
"It was a good day one with all three guys getting a win," UT associate head coach Chris Mahony said. "They got use to the conditions down here which are very different from those in Chattanooga."
