The Tennessee men's tennis team got off to a strong start at the Volunteer State Challenge, winning five singles matches and one doubles match on a beautiful but chilly day at the UT Outdoor Varsity Courts.
"I was proud of the guys today and happy how they handled the conditions," head coach Chris Mahony said. "We had two great performances that highlighted today; Bobby Cameron defeated the 28th ranked player in the nation and then he and Adam defeated the third-ranked doubles team. I'm looking for the guys to come out and play great tennis tomorrow."
Cameron defeated Vanderbilt's Ryan Preston, the highest ranked player in the tournament, in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4. Cameron is now 4-0 this season against ranked players, with Preston (28th) the highest ranked player he's beaten.
Chris Racz and Davey Sandgren playing their first match in front of UT fans both won. Racz defeated Vanderbilt's Scott Lieberman 6-1, 6-4. Sandgren battled back to defeat the Commodore's Vijay Paul, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The Vols' biggest win of the day though may have been in doubles. Cameron and Hubble, who haven't played together in doubles during their career at UT, defeated the nation's third-ranked team of Andreas Siljestrom and Marco Born 8-2 to cap the day for Tennessee.
Overall, the Vols captured five of the six singles matches it played against Vanderbilt. Jordan Magarik had Vanderbilt's only win over the Vols, a 6-2, 6-2 victory over UT's Johnny Thornton.
