MEMPHIS - Tennessee freshman Johnny Thornton was defeated Thursday at ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Championships. The Chattanooga native lost to Reid Bourgeois of Southern Miss in straight sets at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
"Johnny's been playing well in practice," Tennessee head coach Michael Fancutt said. "But he has to take his level of play in practice and be able to put that into a match situation."
The Vols have three players slated to begin competition in the main singles draw Friday morning. Memphis native Rawl Martin returns home to face Karim Alayli of Ole Miss, while senior Wade Orr plays Memphis junior Martin Tamla. Both Vol netters would both face top-10 seeds if they win their respective opening-round matches.
Tennessee senior Simon Rea, the No. 12-ranked collegiate singles player in the nation, is the fourth-highest ranked participant in this weekend's event. He is seeded No. 5 and received a bye into the round of 64, which begins play Friday afternoon.
The Southeast Regional-co-hosted by the University of Memphis-is one of nine NCAA Division I men's regional tournaments that will be taking place at sites throughout the nation during the month of October. All singles finalists and doubles champions from the various regional events are granted automatic entry into the main draw of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which takes place Nov. 6-9 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
