ORLANDO, Fla. -- Back in action for the first time in nearly a month, Tennessee junior Brandon Fickey made the most of his time back on the tennis courts Thursday.
Fickey advanced in singles and doubles as the Vols wrapped up the first day of the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.
Fickey wasted no time in his early morning singles match, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Richard Brej of Florida. It was the fourth win of the fall for the Knoxville junior, who missed the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships with injury.
Later in the day, Fickey rejoined senior Jarryd Chaplin on the doubles court for a routine 8-3 win against David Sofaer and Stefan Menichella of Pepperdine. The Vol duo is a 3-4 seed this week
Senior Colton Norton advanced in singles with a walkover against fifth-seeded Dominic Cotrone of Florida State, who withdrew from singles.
In other matches, Chaplin lost 6-3, 6-1 to Kenny Sabacinski of Notre Dame. Freshman Sunay Bhat fell 6-0, 6-0 to Southern California's Michael Grant.
