Local Vols Lead Tennessee on Day One of UT Fall Classic

Oct. 29, 2004

Tennessee men's tennis players and Tennessee natives Ben Rogers and Johnny Thornton both won Friday at the Goodfriend Tennis Complex on day one of the UT Fall Classic.

"Two good wins by local Tennessee boys Ben Rogers and Johnny Thornton," UT head coach Michael Fancutt said. "They both played well."

Rogers fell into a 5-2 deficit in the first set of his singles match against MTSU's Greg Pollack but rallied to win the set in a tiebreaker 7-6. He carried his momentum to the second set winning 6-2 to capture the match. Thornton defeated MTSU's Marc Boiron 6-2, 7-6(3)

The other Vols could not duplicate the winning ways of Rogers and Thornton. Rawl Martin, Ockie Oosthuizen and Kiril Tcherveniachki all lost their singles matches. Oosthuizen dropped a heartbreaker to MTSU's Andreas Siljestrom 6-3, 0-6, 7-6(4). Oosthuizen was down 4-1 in the third set and rallied to force a tiebreaker but he could not complete the comeback.

Oosthuizen did manage to complete his comeback in doubles. Teaming with Rogers, the UT sophomores stormed back from a 7-4 deficit to defeat Kentucky's Nate Emge and Nolan Polley 9-8(3). Tcherveniachki and Thornton also participated in doubles but lost to Kentucky's Tigran Martirosyan and Marcus Sundh.

"It was a good come from behind win by Ockie and Ben in doubles to continue their winning ways and form." Fancutt said.
