Tennessee sophomore John-Patrick Smith fell to Ohio State's Steven Moneke in straight-sets Thursday on the first day of the 2008 ITA National Indoor Championships played in Charlottesville, Va.
Smith and Moneke went back and forth in the first set before the Buckeye was able to take a slim advantage and win the first set, 7-5. The 11th-ranked Buckeye got off to a fast start in the second set and Smith was never able to get on track as Moneke advanced to the second round with a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Smith begins play Friday in the consolation bracket.
The 2008 National Indoor Championships features 17 of the preseason top 20 players in the country.
