WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Four Vols take to the tennis courts a week before the dual match season to compete at the Wake Forest Spring Invitational starting Friday.
As the Vols gear up for their Jan. 17 team opener against Tennessee Tech, this weekend's individual singles and doubles tournament serves as one final tuneup for several members of team and marks the career debut of January newcomer Sebastian Yllera.
Sophomore Hunter Reese, seeded No. 1 in singles, is making his much-anticipated return to competition after his fall season was cut short by injury. Reese put together a 10-3 record through three tournaments with four wins against nationally ranked opponents. Reese starts the new year ranked 40th and takes on William and Mary's Ben Hoogland to start the tournament.
Senior Taylor Patrick, who had an 11-win fall, plays Columbia's Max Schnur in the first round. Junior Colton Norton missed the fall season with an injury and will play his first match of the year in both singles and doubles. His opponent is yet to be determined.
Yllera is one of the Vols' new players this semester, as is Poland-native Bartosz Sawicki. Yllera, from Rio Negro, Argentina, was the second-ranked player in the 18s age division last year in his home country. He will play Liberty's Seah Thomas in his first collegiate match.
In doubles, Reese and Yllera are seeded second and take on Egon Samaai and Thomas to start the morning's competition. Patrick and Norton play the top-seeded Wake Forest team of Amogh Prabhakar and David Hopkins.
