Vol Netters Put Four Doubles Teams Into Quarterfinals of SEC Indoor Championships Complete Singles Results Complete Doubles Results
NORCROSS, Ga. - The Tennessee tennis team put four doubles tandems and one singles player into the quarterfinals of the SEC Indoor Championships Friday in Norcross, Ga., at the Racquet Club of the South. Tennessee has had much success recently with its doubles play and that did not change Friday as all four doubles teams advanced. The nation's No. 6-ranked duo of Adam Carey and Mark Parsons defeated Jesse Smatt and Janjin Sadovich of LSU 8-6. The No. 13 pair of Peter Handoyo and Andy Crews defeated Conor Casey and Kristofer Stahlberg of Ole Miss 8-4. Paul Podbury and Mario Toledo downed No. 49 Eddie Coates and Bobby Reynolds of Vanderbilt 9-7. Freshmen Wade Orr and Simon Rea had an impressive victory in only their second match as partners. They defeated the nation's No. 48 duo of Bo Hodge and Lesley Joseph from Georgia 9-8(7-5). "We played great in the doubles matches," Mahony said. "I think we are on the right track with our doubles teams. When you have new people, which we have three here, it is sometimes hard to get adjusted in doubles with new partners. But all of our players have really stepped up and I believe that is evident having four doubles teams in the quarterfinals." In the morning singles action, four of five players advanced to the afternoon's third round. The hottest Tennessee player right now might be Mark Parsons who has now won nine matches in a row including one tournament title (Milwaukee Classic) and has advanced to the quarterfinals here at the SEC Indoors. Parsons first defeated Daniel Kiernan of LSU 6-3, 6-3 in the second round before taking a three-set victory over Kristofer Stahlberg of Ole Miss 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Parsons will continue in Saturday's quarterfinals against No. 31 Brandon Wagner of Georgia. Wagner's third round victim was Tennessee's Peter Handoyo. Handoyo, the nation's No. 9 player, started the day out well by defeating Bobby Reynolds of Vanderbilt 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. He would then go on to lose a hard-fought match to Reynolds 3-6, 6-0, 7-6(14-12) in the round of 16. Paul Podbury also won his second round match to start the day. He defeated Patrick Chucri of Ole Miss 6-2, 6-1 before losing his third round match to No. 5 Bo Hodge of Georgia 6-4, 6-4. Tennessee newcomer Mario Toledo showed Friday he is every bit as good as advertised. Toledo won his morning match over Vanderbilt's No. 1 player Eddie Coates 6-0, 6-2. He then took No. 3 Matias Boeker of Georgia to three sets before having to retire due to a leg injury. Toledo lost the match 4-6, 6-0, 4-3(ret.). Adam Carey was the only Vol to lose in the second round, but he may have had the toughest assignment of the day. Carey lost to Marco Baron of Mississippi State 6-3, 6-2. Baron, who sat out the fall due to injury, was the NCAA's No. 2-ranked player for the 2000 season. "Overall, I would say the day was a huge success," UT assistant coach Chris Mahony said. "In the morning singles matches (second round) every player won in straight sets except for Carey who lost to Mississippi State's No. 1 player. Everyone really gave great effort in the afternoon singles matches although the results were not as favorable. Mario (Toledo) has been especially pleasing. First he knocked off Vanderbilt's No. 1 player, then he took the tournament's No. 1 seed to three sets before unfortunately suffering an injury. I was very pleased and I believe everyone is fairly confident right now." SINGLES: Round 2: Round 3: DOUBLES Round 2: Other Stories Related to the SEC Indoor Championships
