Junior John-Patrick Smith remained the top-ranked player in singles and doubles with senior Davey Sandgren in the second round of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional rankings released Thursday.
It comes as no real surprise that the Vols, ranked second nationally, are by extension the No. 1-ranked team in the region. The regional rankings are conducted by polling. Fellow SEC school Kentucky is ranked second.
Smith, ranked fourth nationally, has a 25-5 doubles record with 15 of those wins coming against ranked opponents. He was also No. 1 in the first Ohio Valley Regional rankings, which came out Jan. 5
Five Vols are regionally ranked in singles. Junior Boris Conkic climbed to third in the polls following his 12-1 start to 2010. Freshman Rhyne Williams is at No. 8, and senior Matt Brewer is at No. 11. Freshman Tennys Sandgren, who joined the team in January, came in at No. 14.
Davey Sandgren and Smith, who moved up to second in the national rankings earlier this week, still occupy the top regional spot with a 22-3 record and an 11-match winning streak.
Conkic and Williams improved to fifth nationally and remained second in the region. They have an 18-2 doubles record this year in addition to a nine-match winning streak of their own.
Regional rankings will not be released again until the end of the season.
