On the heels of clinching Tennessee's win against Baylor, redshirt freshman Hunter Reese picked up SEC Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
Reese, a native of Kennesaw, Ga., defeated No. 82 Roberto Maytin 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 on court 2 to secure the 4-3 victory for Tennessee in the final non-conference match of the year. He also won his eighth-consecutive doubles match with fellow freshman Mikelis Libietis at the No. 1 position.
The player of the week award was the first SEC honor of any kind in Reese's young career. Doubles partner Libietis has been selected SEC Freshman of the Week a Tennessee-record three times this year.
Reese has played on court 3 for most of his singles matches this season but moved up to court 2 for the last two weekends. His win over Maytin was his first win in three matches at the position. He is 4-4 against ranked opponents this season.
Reese has been in and out of the ITA singles rankings this year -- rising as high as No. 95 -- but he and Libietis have become a fixture high in the doubles rankings. Reese and Libietis are currently ranked seventh nationally and are believed to be the first all-freshman Tennessee doubles team to reach the national top 10.
They are 19-4 overall the season and 13-2 at the top of the lineup in dual matches. As teams reenter SEC play this weekend, Reese and Libietis are the only No. 1 doubles team to start league matches 4-0.
Tennessee (9-9, 1-3 SEC) faces LSU at home Friday at 2 p.m. before traveling to Arkansas on Sunday.
