Vols Remain at No. 2 in ITA Rankings; Smith Stays No. 1

The Tennessee Volunteers experienced almost no change in Tuesday's ITA national rankings, remaining at No. 2 as a team entering this week's SEC Tournament.

John-Patrick Smith defeated his lone opponent since the last ranking period in straight sets to remain atop the national singles rankings for the second week. The Vols still have four others in the national rankings: Boris Conkic (No. 37), Rhyne Williams (No. 44), Tennys Sandgren (No. 114) and Matt Brewer (No. 117).

In doubles, Smith and Davey Sandgren dropped two places to fourth following a loss. Conkic and Williams, although they won their match, fell one place to eighth.

In Singles

Smith defeated No. 77 Nate Schnugg 6-2, 6-2 in the Vols' 6-1 victory over Georgia on Saturday to claim the outright SEC regular-season title. Smith retained the No. 1 ranking and improved to 35-6 overall, with 25 wins against ranked opponents. He's only one shy of his 2009 win total.

Though on a four-match losing streak, Conkic gained three spots in the rankings to No. 37. Williams picked up SEC C0-Freshmen of the Week honors Tuesday morning and a few hours later, he also rose three positions in the rankings to No. 44.

Despite a team-leading 11-match winning streak, Tennys Sandgren fell nine spots to No. 114. Brewer, who has not played in three weeks after injuring his ankle, stayed in the rankings at No. 117.

And in Doubles

Smith and Sandgren, the Vols' No. 1 team, fell to fourth in the rankings. They have a 31-6 record this season. They enter the SEC Tournament with 70 wins together, just five wins away from tying Chris Mahony and Pablo Montana (1993-96) for second on the career doubles wins list.

Conkic and Williams have been absolute models of consistency this year with a 20-1 record in dual matches at the No. 2 position. They have a 29-3 overall record.

Interestingly, the team of Conkic and Smith was the Vols' only pairing to move up in this week's rankings, going up three spots to seventh. They played just five matches together, but it was against some of the best competition in the country in their title run at the ITA All-American Championships.
