The Tennessee Volunteers earned the No. 2 seed in the 64-team field for the NCAA Tennis Championships and will host the first two rounds beginning May 15.
The Vols (26-1), one of 16 host schools, play Winthrop (13-11) in the first round on campus at Barksdale Stadium on May 15 at noon. The winner of that match will play either East Tennessee State (15-7) or Alabama (13-13) on May 16 at 1 p.m.
The winner of the second-round match will advance to the field of 16 and compete at the championship site in Athens, Ga., beginning May 20.
Tennessee has hosted the first two rounds seven times since 1999 and is 13-1 in those matches. Last season, the Vols defeated East Tennessee State 4-0 in the first round and Duke 4-1 in the round of 32 in Knoxville.
May 15 will mark the Vols' first meeting with Winthrop, which is making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Championships in the last eight years. Tennessee has already picked up wins against ETSU and Alabama earlier this season. The Vols swept ETSU 7-0 in the season opener Jan. 23 and defeated Alabama 4-1 on their first road trip of the SEC season March 7.
Tennessee has been ranked second in the ITA national rankings for most of the season behind Virginia, which was awarded the No. 1 seed in the draw. Texas received the No. 3 seed and will be on Tennessee's half of the draw. Ohio State is the No. 4 seed.
The Vols have already compiled one of their most successful seasons in program history, winning both the SEC regular-season and tournament titles in the same year for the first time since 1990. They have won 16 consecutive matches entering the tournament and have shut out a school-record 13 opponents this season.
