Clemson Outlasts Boise State, 4-3

May 10, 2013

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Clemson men's tennis team battled its way to a 4-3 win over Boise State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at the University of Tennessee's Barksdale Stadium.

Clemson will face the winner of Friday afternoon's first-round match between No. 6 Tennessee and South Carolina State. That second-round clash is set to begin Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.

Clemson's Gerardo Meza and Dominique Maden gutted out hard-fought wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, to power the Tigers past the Broncos Friday.

Clemson began the weekend's action at the Knoxville Regional by jumping out to early leads at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles positions.

The Tigers tandem of Meza and Hunter Harrington dealt the first blow, dispatching Boise State's Aidan Reid and Toby Mitchell 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

Clemson then clinched the doubles point with a victory at No. 2 doubles, as Zachary Rigsby and Ayrton Wibowo defeated the BSU pairing of Garrett Patton and Scott Sears 8-4.

Boise State's Andrew Bettles and Nathan Sereke led Clemson's sibling duo of Dominique and Yannick Maden 4-3 on court No. 1 when their match was suspended.

Patton - son of BSU head coach Greg Patton - opened the singles scoring, posting a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Clemson's Austin Ansari at the No. 6 spot to tie the match at 1-1.

But within 10 minutes, Harrington had swung the momentum back in Clemson's favor by finishing up a 6-4, 7-5 win over Sereke at No. 2 singles.

Moments later, the back-and-forth nature of the match continued. On singles court No. 5, Broncos freshman Thomas Tenreiro defeated Rigsby 7-5, 6-2. It was Tenreiro's 19th consecutive singles victory.

Meza later downed Sears 6-4, 6-4 on court No. 3, and Dominique Maden clinched the match for Clemson with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win on court No. 4.

In-between Clemson's final singles victories on courts Nos. 3 and 4, Bettles logged a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Yannick Maden at No. 1 singles.
