Kredich Adds Fenwick to Staff

June 11, 2012

Swimming and diving head coach Matt Kredich added a second former UT graduate assistant to his staff with the return of Tyler Fenwick as associate coach.

Fenwick has spent the last three years as the head men's national team coach for the Mission Viejo Nadadores, a premier swimming club in California. He was previously a graduate assistant at Tennessee from 2007-09.

"When this job opened up, one of my first thought was, `It's time for Tyler Fenwick to come home to Knoxville,'" Kredich said. "In the last three years Tyler has been one of the most productive senior level coaches in the country. He has demonstrated a powerful understanding of how to develop swimmers and how to prepare them for international competition, so he's clearly shown his expertise, particularly when it comes to distance swimming."

The newly combined men's and women's program now has two former Tennessee graduate assistants on staff as Fenwick joins Ashley Jahn, who worked with the Lady Vols from 2009-10 and officially returned to Knoxville last week as an assistant coach.

At Mission Viejo, Fenwick's swimmers have broken 13 program records, four Southern California records and one national age group record. Three have posted qualifying times for the USA Swimming Olympic Trials, and two of his swimmers made the U.S. Junior National Team last year.

Fenwick, a native of Philadelphia, swam for three seasons at William and Mary and earned a bachelor's degree in English in 2004. He received his master's in sport management at Tennessee.

While at Tennessee, he worked with the Lady Vols and also spent time training swimmers from the local clubs. He was the head coach for the Tennessee Masters program and an assistant coach with Tennessee Aquatics and Pilot Aquatic club.

"During his time here as a GA, he showed his character, and that's the critical piece to this hire," Kredich said. "Tyler is extremely hard working, caring, loyal, and of the strongest moral fiber. He will help our staff create a vision for each individual athletes' success in the pool and out, and help us create and live a vision for a championship culture at the University of Tennessee."

Fenwick will arrive at Tennessee following the USA Swimming Olympic Trials, which runs June 25 through July 2 in Omaha, Neb.
