A testament to pure will and toughness was on display Sunday at the World University Games Tennis Tournament as rising University of Tennessee junior Boris Conkic and Serbian parter Aleksander Grubin used three sets to advance to the quarterfinals.

In a match that lasted well over two hours, Conkic and Grubin finally mustered enough strength to defeat the Hungarian brothers' team of Andreas and Kristian Kuharszky, 7-6 (9-7), 6-7 (11-9), 10-6, in second round play. The Serbian duo get Monday off awaiting their quarterfinal opponent which is the winner of Korea's Ye Ra Lee/Hyun Mun and Slovenia's Matjaz Jurman/Mitja Zajsek.

Despite winning more points (45-44) and posting five aces in the second set, the Hungarian's won an 11-9 tiebreaker, capping a furious rally. This after an evenly played first set that saw the only break come in the tiebreaker that gave the Serbian pair the 9-7 win. The Serbs then dominiated from the outset in the third for the match victory.

John-Patrick Smith resumes play on Monday after getting Sunday off. In third round doubles action, Smith and fellow compatriot John Peers, the No. 6 seed, face Sweden's Alexander Milles/Alexander Thams who beat Germany's Mario Eckardt/Klaus Jank, 6-4, 6-3. Should Smith/Peers win, they face the Great Britain team of Dominic Inglot/Max Jones who downed the No. 3-seeded Ukrainian pair of Ivan Sergeyev/Artem Smirnov in the first round and France's Maxime Quinqueneau/Jacques Rousset in round two. Both Ukraine players are the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, in the singles tournament.

Inglot, a senior at the University of Virginia, was part of the doubles tandem that defeated Smith and Davey Sandgren in the finals of the 2009 NCAA Doubles Championship in May.

In round three singles play, the 14th-seeded Smith faces Thams who was a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, winner over Italy's Pietro Ansaldo. A round of 16 match awaits the winner of the Smith-Thams match. After receiving a first round bye, Smith earned a second round win over Phil Stephens of Great Britain, 6-3, 6-4.
