Williams, Sandgren Capture Doubles Title at Pittsburgh

July 11, 2010

Rhyne Williams and Tennys Sandgren defeated the top-seeded team Sunday to claim the doubles title at the Men's Futures of Pittsburgh.

Williams and Sandgren, rising sophomores at UT, dropped the first set but rallied to beat Gregory Ouellette and Vasek Pospisil 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9) at the Mt. Lebanon Tennis Center.

For Williams, it was his first doubles title in four championship appearances at Futures events. Sandgren recorded his first Futures doubles title as well.

Williams also competed in the singles championship but was unable to recapture his Pittsburgh title. Williams, who won the tournament as a 16-year-old in 2007, fell to third-seeded Adam El Mihdawy 6-3, 7-6 (6).

The two Vols are participating in a series of Futures tournaments as part of the 13-member USTA Summer Collegiate Team. Williams and Sandgren competed in Rochester, N.Y., last week and reached the doubles semifinals. They have a 6-1 record together this summer.
