Williams to Play in College Tennis Exo

Aug 22, 2013

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Former Vol Rhyne Williams will face his former college tennis rival Saturday in an exhibition on Arthur Ashe Kids' Day before the U.S. Open.

Williams will face former Southern California standout Steve Johnson in the third of four matches pitting former college tennis stars on court 10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Matches start at 9:30 a.m. with Williams to take the court at 11 a.m.

In college, Williams and Johnson faced off in the title match two of the three major college championships during the 2010-11 season. Williams won the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in three sets, and Johnson did the same in the NCAA singles tournament.

Arthur Ashe Kids' Day is held two days before the start of the U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam of the Year. Williams received a wild card into the 128-player singles draw and will face Russia's Nikolay Davydenko in the opening round.

Currently ranked No. 114, Williams has played in the main draw of four of the last five Grand Slams.

John-Patrick Smith, the Vols' eight-time All-American, is scheduled to play main draw doubles with fellow Aussie Paul Hanley.

The college tennis exhibition is headed by professional doubles player and former Gustavus Adolphus stars Eric Butorac, who is trying to showcase college tennis to the children who will be in attendance.

"Arthur Ashe Kids' Day is all about exposing tennis to the next generation," Butorac said. "The motivation behind this event was to show kids that it's possible to get a great education and use that as a stepping stone to play in the biggest tennis tournament in the world, the U.S. Open."

LIBIETIS, REESE TO BE HONORED SATURDAY
It will be a busy day for current and former Vols on Saturday.

Juniors Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese will be honored as members of the 2013 ITA All-Star Team. Libietis finished last season ranked No. 3 in singles and teamed up in doubles to finish third with Reese.
