The Tennessee men's tennis team advanced eight players into the second round of singles play Friday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.

"I was real proud of the guys today, winning 10 of the 11 matches we played," head coach Chris Mahony said. "Hopefully we can carry the momentum into tomorrow when the competition steps up a notch."

All three Vols in Division I play advanced. Redshirt freshman Davey Sandgren, playing in his first match as a Vol, defeated Murray State's Fadi Zamajaoui, when the Racer retired in the second match with Sandgren ahead 6-2, 2-0. Junior Bobby Cameron defeated Georgia Tech's David North 6-2, 6-4, and senior Ben Rogers cameback to defeat Badr Bouabdellah of Tennessee-Chattanooga 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In Division II, four Volunteers advanced to the second round. Kiril Tcherveniachki got his senior season off to a good start with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win over Charlotte's Felix Bernhoerster. Junior Kaden Hensel also got off to a dominant start with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Nicholas Ksiezopolski of Murray State. Adam Hubble and Derek Stephens both began their sophomore seasons with victories. Hubble came-from-behind to defeat Georgia State's Mattias Skold 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Stephens won in straight-sets over Morton Sivertsen of Louisville 6-0, 6-2.

Johnny Thornton began his final season for the Volunteers with a 6-2, 3-1, (ret.) win over Dusan Milovanovic of Morehead State in Division III.

In doubles action, Cameron and Hensel defeated Louisville's Damar Johnson and David Simon 8-4. Racz and Thornton defeated Georgia's Brad Benedict and Joshua Varela 8-5 in Division II.
