Tennis Newcomers Wrap up Day 1 at UGA

Sept. 13, 2013

ATHENS, Ga. -- Three Tennessee freshmen opened their college tennis careers Friday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.

Markus Kerner and Sean Karl recorded their first win in doubles together, teaming up in the evening to beat Murray State's Max McLean and Adam Taylor in the round of 64. They lost in the next round to Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen and Beck Pennington 8-6.

Karl notably played his first competitive matches since being diagnosed with cancer almost a year ago as a senior in Brentwood, Tenn. He lost his return to the singles court 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to Furman's Luke Synn.

The rest of the Vols also bowed out in main draw singles competition. Senior Colton Norton and Knoxville freshman Sunay Bhat went down in the Division II flight. Kerner, the only Vol playing in the Division I draw, lost to Armstrong Atlantic's Pablo Gor 6-1, 6-4.

Play continues Saturday with consolation matches.
